Be Prepared BEFORE the Disaster Happens

Having your data ready at your fingertips allows your business to be competitive. Without that data, your company is jeopardized. So, think what would happen, specifically to your business, if a disaster to your computer(s) happens. Are you prepared? Do you have a recovery plan in place? Here are some guidelines to help ensure your data will always be available.

Ensuring Your Data Survives a Disaster

Develop A Plan

It makes sense to say the Disaster Recovery Plan is the key to surviving a data disaster. This plan must allow for:

Data Backup

Whether it is on-line or on-site, creating a duplicate copy of your data is absolutely necessary. Caution: Do not rely on manual procedures for backups -- you may forget to do them. Always looks for an automated procedure for data backup.

Redundancy

Determine if you need data backed up in more than one place.

Geographic Displacement

Housing your critical data in a different geographic region will guard against natural disasters taking down your data.

File and Folder Identification

Not all files and folders are critical. Program files can always be reinstalled. Specific user data could be lost forever if not backed up.

Backup Schedule

Identify if you want daily (nightly) backups that occur when most users are away from their machines, or if you want continuous backup. Continuous backup ensures most recent changes are captured, but there is a reduction of processing speed that will be noticed.

Backup Type

Additionally, identify the specific type of data backup. That is, do the files need full or incremental backups? Do you need full backups done once a week, with incremental backups done daily?

Retention Policy

Specify how long files need to be retained. Although disk space is much cheaper than it has ever been, capture and storing files indefinitely may not be the best option. Keep business data retention policies in mind, too.

Critically important to the Disaster Recovery Plan is management understanding and support. This means business management must acknowledge and fund the necessary steps and tools for implementing the Recovery Plan.

Deploy IT

It does no good to have a beautiful plan if it doesn't get implemented.

Ensure that all the machines identified in the plan have the proper software and hardware installed to execute the Recovery Plan

Perform an audit on all identified machines as part of the qualification of readiness of the plan

Rehearse IT

Now that everything is in place, is it actually working?

Test IT

Set up a mock disaster for a limited number of machines. Can you recover their data? Identify which steps in the Recovery Plan and Implementation are just not working or causing bottlenecks.

Test IT regularly

Don't assume that once you completed one test it will always work in the future. Perform some regular tests for the complete process to ensure no "hiccups" have been introduced.

Following these basic guidelines and you will have your data up and ready after any disaster.

Carbonite Online Backup Review: Does It Do the Job?

Carbonite is a pretty well known name in the world of online backup. It makes use of a desktop interface that's intuitive and easy to set up and that makes backing up extremely convenient for end-users.

Carbonite divides its plans into home and business options. For the business user, the plan includes 250 gigabytes of storage for a total of $229 every year. This plan is expandable, however. There is also a server option available for business clients that need to back up their servers and which includes a considerably larger amount of storage space. The home plan costs $59 per year and allows you to backup one computer. A free trial is offered for a 14-day term for home users and a 30-day term for business users.

Carbonite has some very nice features, particularly for those who aren't the most technically advanced computer users out there and who like a system that offers them some assistance in backing up the files correctly.

Pros

Carbonite has one of the most interesting ideas in backup software around. Instead of having to go through all of your files manually and figure out which ones you want to backup, the initial installation process will backup all of your documents, photos, videos and music files for you. You can add additional files to the backup process, of course, and it's no more difficult the right clicking on them. This makes it a very convenient service and one that will most certainly appeal to users who like things to be as automatic as possible. SSL encryption is supported during transfers.

Cons

Carbonite will take a long time to complete its backup process on the first use. Because it backs up so many files automatically, it may even take a couple of days to finish uploading everything off your computer. It's a great option but expect to lose a bit of bandwidth during the first backup operation.

Analysis

Carbonite offers great business plans and great home user plans. The business plans should be enough to satisfy the needs of most companies, with a whopping 500 gigabytes of storage being available for their server backup plan. For home users, the initial backup routine may be a bit frustrating in the amount of time it is likely to take, but the security it provides will be welcome. Subsequent backup routines will not take nearly as long.

Conclusion

Carbonite has plenty of features that will appeal to the end user. Principally, the fact that this backup service allows you to have your files backed up automatically means that there is very little guesswork involved in it. Adding new files to the backup routine is simple enough that anybody will be able to understand it. This makes it a great choice for users who just want something that will automatically back up their financial files and so forth. Business users will likely appreciate many of the same features but the intuitive interface and automatic backup will likely not be of as much use to IT professionals.

Essential Features And Benefits Of Remote Backup Services

Today the remote backup services have their own significance for every organization as they have to store their business data on a remote location. This service allows the users to make a backup and store their data on a computer system. Mostly the client software and applications have an inbuilt backup system. These services are also provided exclusively by various organizations offering NOC services.

These programs are scheduled to run on a daily backing up process and run at the time when the PC is not being used. These are used for collection and compression of the data and stores in an encrypted form. They store the data on a remote location that is called an off-site location. There are many types of software and applications available that provide backup services. These providers use a particular niche of market for their products. Many attractive features are given to the customers such as trial backup service and beta versions.

A general feature is that the data is converted into an encrypted form before its backup and storage tasks are performed. There is a network backup and a continuous backup facility in this service. The difference between these two is a network backup store the data on many systems and in a continuous one the data is stored on a continuous basis to a particular system.

Data compression is done to solve the purpose of minimizing the bandwidth which is being used. But the users can set the bandwidth according to their use. Another feature used to down the network traffic is differential data compression; here the data is transferred only when it is changed. Now the providers have file by file storage features with an online access.

During this current scenario of business, organizations trust the remote backup services to the third party outsource services providers. They make sure that the important information in the form of data is securely transmitted and stored to a remote location and can be accessed whenever the recovery is required. These services are also very affordable and reliable for everyone. The service requires no hardware and human touch after its setup process is done. They store the data in a data center that allows the user to access it from any geographical location in the world. We can't say about any natural calamity but if any disaster happens then your data is safe and secure and again you can retrieve it easily. The amount of the use of these services depends on the size and the requirements of the company.

Remote Backup Software - The Step Into Secure Data Management

Try to imagine how many of today's major companies would be without backup solution; they would be eating each other for access to their backup files and the rest of their stored data, competing with each other within the company for bandwidth and LAN access to get what they need when a laptop or a tablet crashes and they need to recover their data files. This is why remote backup solution was introduced in the first place and this is still the primary reason why major companies and wide-running industries need to consider getting the best remote backup software to allow fluid backup-and-access throughout the work area without disrupting one another and each other's work.

Backup solution is not designed just for the instances when things break or when the system fails however. Many instances remote backup software is used for workers who need to access files without having to connect to the backup system manually via wires and cables. This is essential for those who need to recover data in the middle of a meeting; those who need to get their files while on the road or while setting up the rest of their presentation and need to avoid the hassle of contacting a technician.

Lastly laptop backup program is also invaluable for the few circumstances when natural disasters may fall on the local area. It would be disastrous for a company to lose their physical resources due to a flood or an earthquake and then to discover that the rest of their stored data was lost as well. Laptop backup solution eradicates this problem smoothly and allows the company to recover via remote access to their stored data. This is one of the major instances when remote backup software has proven its valor to keep a company on its feet besides ease of access for company employees.

Getting the best backup program is not as quick and easy as choosing a sandwich from the local fast food center though as there are certain features that will define good remote backup software that will keep a company firmly on its feet despite separate instances when a computer unit crashes or when cable lines fail from the horrible remote backup software that may end up ruining a company due to its inability to sustain the sheer amount of backup access that a running company requires.

There have been many instances when a company had utilized poorly designed laptop backup program. The results were disastrous. They spent a good amount in getting the backup system for their work place just to realize that it was a disastrous waste of resource because it was too difficult to use or it had poor security measures and it couldn't handle amount of data they had planned to store.

When looking for the best remote backup program there are a few essential qualities you need to look into. These are the most important features good remote backup software will provide: automatic data backup - both spontaneous and scheduled backups are important, a multi-level security system to keep data locked for employees and employees only, minimal storage requirements and an easy to use interface for any type of employee to utilize the system. With the right remote backup software your company will be on firm grounds.

Backing Up Your Computer

Your PC repair service can repair almost any damage you do to your computer within reason. That means repairing corrupt files, damaged hardware and viruses, and it means helping you to make your computer run faster and be safer in the future. However while your PC repair service can most probably fix your computer, what they might not be able to do is to do so without losing important files. If you have crucial files on your computer then some of the methods that PC repair companies use will often mean that you lose your files - for instance if they opt to reformat your hard drive. At the same time if they can't fix your computer, which can happen on occasion, then this will mean you need to get a new one and of course that will often mean you lose the files that were on the old one.

Thus backing up your information is incredibly important, and you should do this regularly and often. There are many ways you can do this. Here are a couple of your options.

External Hard drive: These are hard drives that plug into your computer. These usually have a huge amount of storage space so you can back up a lot of data onto them. The downside is that they are quite bulky however, relatively expensive and also their physical nature means that they can be broken or lost.

Flash Cards: Flash cards and other memory cards are great for backing up data because they are highly cheap and highly portable and these days almost as large as hard drives. The downside of flash cards is that they are easy to lose and quite delicate and so easy to break. If you use this method then keep them safe.

Other Computers: Having your information on more than one computer is a simple way to keep the info safe, though again the information is in the same room and you should avoid keeping your back up PC on the same network.

Online: Online back up is a very logical way to back up your data. The joy of online back up is that it is online and thereby not a physical device. This means that you can't 'lose' it or 'damage' it, and the hosting company looking after your files will have many fail safes in case the server has troubles.

The best solution is to use multiple of these options to keep your data safe. This way if you do need PC repair your information will be safe on at least one of these devices. The last remaining problem is to remember to back up your information and if you want to do this then you need to do is to use software that can automatically back up your data (for instance some word processors have an option to continually back up files in a pre-selected location), or to give yourself a set time when you regularly back up all of your data - perhaps at the end of the day before you switch off, or once a week.

Desktop Backup Software: The Defining Features

Is it really that important for people to invest in desktop backup software? Consider this little fact: pretty much everything people do every day of their lives is done online, through a computer and no matter how well organized you may have sorted your files on your iPhone, your tablet and your gaming device, it all boils down to using a personal computer at home to store the majority of all your software, office files and documents.

With a single swift stroke from a power outage or when a deadly virus infects your computer and eats away your storage space faster than you can click, all that data is gone in the blink of an eye, no matter how hard you try to prevent these things from happening. This is why it is essential to keep an updated backup of your desktop and this is the very reason why desktop backup solution is important.

When you are going to shop for PC backup program you have to put into consideration the defining features that identify the ideal desktop backup software from a weaker product that will drive you nuts. The first thing you need to look into when buying a backup program is its complexity level. It is easy to get lost with a lot of things computer-related and having a very difficult desktop backup software system can kill your motivation to continue with protecting your system.

You also need to consider how autonomous the PC backup solution works. It is essential that you get automatic updates when your desktop is backing itself up and when this process is complete. Along with this important feature is the ability to automatically schedule backup sessions. These are very important features because you never know when something could happen and many times people forget to manually start a backup process so having the software automatically do it for you is one of the best choices you could go for.

There is a lot of desktop backup software that tend to create multiple backup data. This eats a lot of space on your hard drive and it takes a much longer time to complete the process so look for a good desktop backup that will dedicate its time and power to make only one, continuously updated backup file of your entire desktop. This will consume less time and it will be an updated, more refined desktop backup file.

Lastly do not be cheap with your choices when it comes to buying desktop backup software. Backing up your computer is an essential procedure to avoid disastrous problems in case your computer system just crashes due to a good number of reasons (viruses are the number one culprit here). You get what you pay for when it comes to a lot of computer-related products and the same can be said of backup software. There are a lot of aspects you need to look into just to make sure you won't lose everything you have worked and paid for in your computer so look for desktop backup software that fits well into your budget.

Laptop Encryption

As the world moves deeper into our technological era, keeping your data safe with laptop encryption is of the utmost importance. In fact, according to a recent study by the IDC, well over 60% of data is unprotected on both laptops and desktops. Losing data for a company can mean great loss and theft of intellectual property that a company may or may not recover from. For the individual who does not have proper laptop encryption, losing data instantly means compromising the privacy of themselves and others, not to mention losing viable memorabilia that has sentimental value. For companies, proper encrypted data can protect trade secrets and pertinent financial information that needs to be kept on-site. A company or individual that does not employ a proper encryption process immediately compromises their data.

A laptop is an asset when it has private personal data on it and a stolen computer without proper protection can mean big losses for individuals, companies, and business owners. Losing marketing plans, competitor information, and the embarrassment of having to tell individuals that their privacy has been compromised are just a few of the consequences of not having proper protection on a device. With the rise of hacking forums and instructional advice on how to hack into laptops and steal data, those who are not protected are at a greater risk than any other time in history. Many people steer away from laptop encryption because they do not understand it, but there is a sensible and easy way to successfully protect confidential data.

Fully encrypted data offers the laptop owner not only peace of mind but far exceeds partial encryption techniques that do not fully protect the laptop owner. There are many different types of encryption techniques that are available. Windows and many third-party software programs can help protect operating systems such Windows, Linux and Macintosh. Within the scope of these programs, protection can range from protecting small files to a hardware based laptop encryption. There are free solutions for personal or corporate encryption and there are very expensive solutions as well. Depending on what type of data that you have a laptop should determine the amount that you need to spend order to protect it.

Many people do not take the time to employ proper laptop encryption, but with theft increasing, it is now a "must do" for those who wish to protect themselves properly. The best type of laptop protection is known as TPM, which stands for trusted platform module. Trusted platform module technology allows for an individual to have laptop encryption with full disk encryption. TPM technology is very easy to utilize as an individual only needs a hard drive that can be encrypted and a coprocessor.

Many people are not familiar with TPM technology, but it is a small chip that is installed onto the motherboard that allows the laptop to have device authentication and enables the device for laptop encryption. TPM technology works by generating a set of encryption keys that makes it impossible for thieves to recover data from a hard drive. TPM technology is best thought of as a signature that is unique to each laptop. Utilizing this type of encryption technology is paramount when you want to protect your data with laptop encryption.

Again, there are many solutions to proper data security that are available from third-party vendors that can help you successfully protect your computer and give you peace of mind in case a theft does occur. Compromises due to inadequate laptop security can have consequences far beyond what one might think as possible. Taking the steps to protect your computer with full disk encryption is the wisest decision that anyone can make when they own a laptop. If your laptop is unprotected, please take the proper laptop encryption steps to ensure that your data is safe from predators.

Data Recovery Software Can Be A Lifesaver!

PCs are used in almost every facet of human life in this modern era. Technology has changed the world and as such the world has grown increasingly reliant on the personal computer to store and retrieve data. In fact, some companies and individuals are almost completely digital now, with almost no paper trail at all. This creates an issue, however. Data loss is a very real problem for individuals and companies alike.

Is data loss inevitable? Absolutely. If a person or business doesn't regularly back up their information, then data loss is very likely to happen at some point. No hard drives are immune from failure, whether the issue is on the hardware side or the software side. If even one hard drive fails, a person or company can lose a significant amount of data in an instant.

Luckily, there are companies that specialize in data recovery. Many times, in the event of either a physical or logical disk failure, the data can be recovered if proper steps are taken. It is possible to fix both hardware and software problems with hard disk drives using the techniques that these data recovery companies have mastered over the years.

Hardware problems pose a special set of risks, because depending on the problem, every time the drive is accessed, more damage can be done to the disk, creating unrecoverable data. Typically, to fix a hardware failure, either spare parts will be used to repair the faulty parts on the original drive or the platters will be taken out of the broken drive and put in a known working hard drive assembly. There are also other techniques that companies employ to fix hardware issues, from literally freezing drives and attempting to recover the data, to installing the drive in a known good PC as a non-boot partition, and trying to get the raw data off of the drive.

Software issues, such as logical issues can typically be a bit easier to fix than hardware issues. Companies typically have pieces of software that can be used to either rebuild the file system on the faulty hard drive or they will try to pull the raw data off of the hard drive and use a program to reassemble the data into usable bits.

Whether a disk has hardware or software issues, if the data on the disk is important it is imperative that a person take action to recover the data in any way possible. Sometimes this can be a costly procedure, but in times of crisis it may be necessary.

Internet Data Backup: By Far The Most Efficient And Safe Storage

Internet data backup is one way to ensure that you do not lose your files. This can prevent the frustration of losing data during power outages or file corruption. In addition, a great advantage of this is that you no longer require a physical storage device such as external hard disks and such.

Data loss can greatly affect your business. Internet data backup has been developed to make sure that this never happens to you. The best way to securely keep your files is not only to put them in an online storage but also in a physical storage device such as USBs and hard disks.

Choices are wide when it comes to selecting online backup storage. Dropbox and Mozy are among the top choices of many. Dropbox is an online storage provider that allows you to have 2GB of free storage space when you sign up. However, if you wish to improve the storage capacity of your internet data backup, then you will have to pay a specific amount depending on the amount of storage size that you need. Dropbox will give you further free space for every successful referral that you make.

There are a lot of companies that offer the service of storing files online. Some might not give you free storage but you can try out their service for a set amount of time. The most common trial period time is 15 days, but you can fin some that are 30 and even 60 days long. Exploring a certain provider first is the best thing to do before you purchase any kind of software. In doing so you are able to find the right service before spendin your hard earned money.

Internet data backup is basically developed to help us safe keep our files effectively. Because of this, more individuals are able to progress faster as you do not need to worry about your files from being corrupted or lost anymore. Data loss happens usually during power interruption and immediate removal of storage device, which can corrupt the files, or the device itself. In addition to this, viruses can also contribute to the loss of files.

Generally, internet data backup has been developed to aid individuals, especially business owners in securing their files. Selections of online storage providers are many. Checking out different providers will ensure that you are able to have the best service you require.

Encountered Data Loss? Go for Mac Data Recovery Software

You can find most computer geeks love to work on Mac. Here, the natural question that pops in mind is what is there in a Mac that these people are so interested to use this operating system? Once you start using the operating system, you can have the answers straight away. It seems, the initial motto behind Mac is to help the home users as well as the professionals doing their daily needs and Mac has marketed Mac as the best OS to do them. Along with many advanced and useful features, the things that usually disappoint Mac users are the data loss situations. However, with time, many Mac data recovery software have been developed to bring back lost data from your Mac system.

Some Mac users have a belief that Mac is good enough to counter any instance of trouble at its own and their system may never go wrong with Mac. But, unfortunately, this belief does not last often. Users do encounter problems in their Mac systems and lose valuable data to it. Some instances of data loss are the result of user mistakes, where as some others are due to system failure or other unexpected events.

Some of the mostly encountered data loss incidents in Mac

Accidental deletion of files or folders

Formatting of individual volume or the entire hard drive, while upgrading OS version

The hard drive or volume un-mountable because of Mac OS X malfunction

Virus or malware infection

File system corruption issues, like catalog file corruption, volume header corruption, master directory block corruption etc.

In all the above cases, the data from your Mac drive either gets lost or becomes completely inaccessible. But, even in case of complete formatting of data, the data remains in the hard drive. Here, you can not see or access deleted or formatted data at its source location any more because of the fact that the OS has removed their entries.

But, with advanced data recovery software, you can recover Mac data back. These utilities are developed with many high-end programs that find out the lost entries of files and help in retrieving the lost, deleted, formatted or inaccessible data back.

No Backup Today = Tears Tomorrow

Nothing strikes more terror into a computer user than when they realise, for whatever reason, that there is a problem with the system and the data is in danger of being lost.

This can be disastrous for both business and home users.

The truth hits home with the equivalent force of being hit by a bullet at point blank range. You can literally see the colour drain away from the face of anyone facing this issue. Even if the data is relatively small, the prospect of rebuilding it is daunting. For some, the consequences are more severe. the Sunday Times reports the following sobering statistics:

80% of all companies suffering a computer system breakdown go out of business within 18 months, and a further 5% cease trading within 5 years.

Only recently a customer called for help after discovering that the hard disk drive had failed in the server machine running the network. This computer contained the full trading history of his business, going back many years. He did not have a single backup he could go to. He was not even able to access the programme disks.

Protection against life's uncertainties
Insurance is available to protect us against life's uncertainties. The greater the potential financial loss, the more likely we are to take out insurance. Here are a few examples of situations where insurance is compulsory or highly advisable:

• Life assurance
• Buildings and contents
• Motor
• Employer's liability
• Travel
• Sickness and accident
• Loan repayments

Of course individual priorities will vary according to personal needs.

• Death is an absolute certainty. Failure to take out life assurance would be very short sighted indeed.
• If you own property you will not get a mortgage with a recognized lender unless you take out buildings insurance. You will also be taking a big risk if you do not cover the contents.
• If you own a motor vehicle, you are legally required to take out insurance if you intend driving it on the roads.

Protection against computer failure
If you use computers to store valuable data you should regard it as inevitable that one day, today or tomorrow, sooner or later, your system will encounter some sort of system that puts it at high risk. Failure to protect your data by the use of backups is like failing to take out life assurance. If (or when) the day of reckoning comes, you may wish that the ground would open and swallow you up.

It should be pointed out that the value of data should not be under estimated. Personal data on a home computer is just as valuable to a home user as data held by a business.

Imagine that you have spent weeks putting together a homework project, or years collecting data about your family history. What would your reaction be if you discover a problem that causes you to lose all of your work?

Failure to backup your data is to live under a false notion: 'it will never happen to me.'

Types of backup:

• Tape streamers
• Raid controllers and Backup servers
• Compression software
• USB and High capacity drives
• Off site backups

Tips about backing up

Keep backup media in a safe place
There is no point going to the trouble of backing up if you leave the backup medium in the computer. If there is a fire, or your computer is stolen, what do you do then?

Use high standard quality backup media
Failure to do so is like making a copy on a scrap or screwed up piece of paper. Don't be surprised if you can't read it when it matters.

Backup everything you cannot afford to lose
Gamblers have a rule that you should only bet what you can afford to lose. Use the same rule for your data. If it is important to you, back it up.

Test the backup
We know of companies that night after night have backed up religiously but come the day of reckoning they discovered that the backup does not work. A backup cannot be guaranteed until it has been tested.

Never test a backup by restoring over live data
If there is a problem with a backup you will almost certainly corrupt live data if you restore it. Test backups by restoring to a different location, or better still, to a different computer.

Have a backup Strategy
If you use tapes, do not use the same tape each time. If you do, you are destroying the previous backup. Have a number of sets of tapes, clearly labeled, that can be used in rotation. Keep a written record of the backups you are doing.

One copy is not a backup
Many people use USB drives as a backup. USB's can fail, be lost or put into the wash in your pocket easily. One copy is not a backup!

Disaster Recovery
If you ignore the need for backups there is a 'last resort' option available. you can employ the services of a disaster recovery company. There are no guarantees that they will be able to recover your data, but one thing is certain - you are looking at a large bill that could have been avoided!

I'm off to do my backups now.

5 Ways To Make Sure Your Data Is Safely Backed Up

1. The most common mistake people make when backing up their data is not having the computer on. Most remote backup solutions will allow you to select a time to start the backup process.

Most of us, myself included, start backups at night after we leave the office or go to bed. Many of us don't want to leave the PC on all night to do a backup. When selecting your remote backup product, make sure it can automatically turn off your computer after completing the backup process. This will save on your electric bill...

2. Not "telling" the remote backup software to back up specific files. There are a lot of backup programs that will backup every little thing you have on the PC. While that sounds nice, it can lead to a lot of files not getting the proper attention they need.

What you should do is select just the files that are worth backing up, like QuickBooks files and family pictures. Good remote backup company techs take great care in selecting what needs to be backed up, and when it should be done.

3. Is my backup encrypted? The most important question for many business and individuals alike is, "can someone see my data?" If you use most common backup software, the answer may surprise you. Not all backup programs are the same; some encrypt your files at your own computer, before even getting to the internet. Many others do not encrypt your personal files until they are at the storage server. When you have to restore your data, some services send your sensitive data unencrypted over the internet, for anyone to see. Make sure your remote backup solution is always encrypted, from the moment the data leaves your computer.

4. How do I know my files are "really" backed up? This is a something that most other backup systems don't or can't do. Why?

Because a human has to do it. At least once a month you should try to restore some files. Also, go over the files you have chosen to back up. You may have created new, important files, which were never added to the backup list. There are too many times I was sure I had my files backed up, when I really did not.

5. I want the cheapest price I can get... period.. I'm with you, I always look for a great price, from cell phones to remote backup. However, are we really safe with a cheap remote backup provider? Are they really going to help, or even care if my data is backed up safe to their system? Are they going to call and make sure all is okay if they see I haven't backed up my system in a day or two? The answer to that is NO! By paying a little more, you will have a better chance of them monitoring your backups like an in-house tech would do if they were at your site. You might pay a little more for this service, but your information will be much safer. Remember the phrase, "You get what you pay for."

Reclaim Your Important Info With Data Recovery Services

In this electronic age, storing documents in large filing cabinets and saving bills for years are almost a thing of the past. Almost all records are kept online now, and most people use their computers for every aspect of their lives, personal and financial. While this is a great practice, as computers make everything easier, there is one downfall. Not enough people make backups of their data. In fact, a very small percentage of people have anything backed up.

While this doesn't seem like a big deal, the truth is, it's a very big deal. Imagine waking up one morning, turning on the computer, and hearing a horrible grinding noise coming from inside the tower. What does that mean? That most likely means the hard drive is shot. This is inevitable, as most hard drives have a life cycle of only a few short years. If a person has a backup, this isn't bad at all. All a person simply has to do is throw in the backup CD, flash drive, or download the files online. What if a person doesn't have a backup, however, and he or she just lost some serious data?

At that point, if the data is important, it may be worth checking into a data recovery service. They can use multiple techniques to try to recover a person's data. First, they will diagnose the drive and see what the root issue of the problem is, then they will do what they can to get the drive to work again. Many different companies have different tricks, but there are quite a few similarities. The first step is usually to try to put the bad hard drive in a known working PC to see if, once the computer fully boots up, they can use software to recover the files on the disk. If that doesn't work, they will often figure out what physical parts of the drive are broken and try to replace them with parts from a healthy drive long enough to get the data.

Even if the company replaces the parts and gets the drive going, that is just a temporary fix though. They will be able to restore a person's data, but that person still needs to replace the drive. After dealing with this issue once, it can be a wakeup call to a person, and he or she should really start to consider making proper backups of their system so that this issue doesn't occur again.

Buying Small Portable Hard Drives for Home or Office Laptops

In this age of unlimited information availability, small portable hard drives are becoming a necessity for all computer users to manage and store important relevant data. The storage capacity of The current laptop internal drives, as well desktop computers, ranging from 200 Gb to 750 Gb, and are usually not enough to store the various emails, music, photos and videos that current users need for their work, home or recreational activities. There are many manufacturers of external drives, each having their unique characteristics and capabilities. If you are in the market for buying external drives, then the following factors should be considered:

1) Usage: The first step in selecting a portable drive is to figure out how you will use the drive. Do you need to extend capability of your internal hard drive because you are running out of space? Do you have critical data like tax information, bank accounts that you want to store offline for privacy and security? Do you want to share home made videos, music, and images with your friends without giving them access to your computer? The usage will dictate how much storage you need for current and future use. For example, I have a 500 Gb laptop which I use to create mini-videos and presentations for business as well as for recreation. My Internal drive is 80% full within a year. I would buy a 750 Gb (gigabytes) to 1 Tb (Terabyte) of cheap portable hard drive to meet my data storage needs for another two years. Currently, portable drives are available in 200 Gb to 2 Tb capacity. The capacities increase every year with advances in hard drive technologies.

2) Speed of Access: The speed with which the external drives access and store data depends on the drive connection to the computer. The older computers usually come with USB 2.0 interface which is a slow connection. The current computers usually comes with USB 3 interface (which are compatible with USB 2 drives) with speeds of ten times faster than the USB 2 interfaces. The Fire wire interfaces are very fast and available both for PCs and Macs. Of course there are price differences of the drives with different interfaces. For my video, image and music needs the USB 3 interface fulfills my requirement.

3) Software capabilities: Many small portable hard drives comes with sophisticated software to back up and restore data, and provide password protection of files and folders. Some of these drives can be configured so that the software run in the background backing updates as they occur. This allows for restoration of files with the latest updates. Hence if the data is critical for your business, be sure to choose drives that have the backup/ restore capabilities.

4) Power Source. The best portable hard drives have plug n play capability. The drives are pre-formatted such that, as soon as they are connected to the computer, the drives are ready to receive data without any further installation. Some of the drives require a power source from an outlet while the smaller drives get their power from the USB 2 or USB 3 connection to the computer. Hence, if you travel frequently, and power source is not readily available, be sure to pick the drives that do not require an independent power source.

Portable drives comes in various models and sizes with different capacities. Some are pricey while others are quite inexpensive. Most of them come with backup software and the pricier ones have added security and password features to protect the drives. If you take time to review the above factors, then you will be able to buy the right small portable hard drive for your use.

If Your Hard Drive Crashes, Do You Know How To Use Data Recovery Services?

It happens to anyone who works in a field where computers are used on a regular basis...eventually, a computer will break. Most repairs aren't too hard to deal with, but hard drive crashes are especially devastating. What does it mean when a hard drive crashes? Well, it can be either a software or a hardware issue, but one thing is certain...when a hard drive goes down, a person's data is in jeopardy, and for all intents and purposes, their data is now on life support.

Hard drives can be damaged physically or logically, and both have dire consequences. For physically damaged drives, care has to be taken that the data can be recovered without further damaging the drive and losing data. This is often done by attempting physical repairs on the drive, or using a variety of proprietary techniques. Physical damage is usually the more serious of the two types of hard drive damage, and it is much harder to deal with than logical damage.

Logical damage to a hard drive can be a bit easier to fix, but the repairs still need to be done by a professional. It doesn't take much to hit a wrong couple of keystrokes and wipe out a disk. Typically, when there is logical damage, files will either show as being corrupted when one tries to open them, or when a person turns on his or her PC, they will get a message similar to "No OS Found" on the main bootup screen on their PC. When logical damage occurs, the data is still physically there, but it is inaccessible, most likely due to corruption of the file system or partition table.

Logical damage can often be fixed by data recovery companies using special software tools designed specifically for this purpose. Sometimes the file system itself can be fixed, but sometimes all that is recoverable is the raw data. If the raw data is all that is recoverable, the restoration of the data can take quite a while, and be a bit expensive, but if the data is important, people often don't have a choice.

Regardless of the type of damage to a hard drive, it is important to realize that all hard drives fail over time. The best way to counter data loss is to have a good backup, but if a person is caught without a good backup, they can often use a company that specializes in data recovery to get their much needed data back.

When a business is seeking a company to handle its remote database consulting and support needs, the decision-makers look at many factors. Ideally, they want the best available at an affordable price, since the well-being of its database information and operation is critical to the well-being of the company. The physical location of the consultant is not an issue, because a remote database consulting firm can serve its clients from anywhere. What is important is the knowledge and experience that the company as a whole brings to the table, as well as the ability to communicate clearly. One way to determine whether the team of remote database administrators (DBAs) is more than proficient enough to handle a business' consulting and support needs is to ask questions and do research. Here are 5 signs of a top remote database consulting team.

Sharing Knowledge
Those who have a deep understanding of a subject are willing to share it with others. This is done in a variety of ways, such as writing white papers and books or giving lectures. Top DBAs should take the time to create white papers on a variety of topics to share some of the intricate details of what they have learned in the field through their experience. Data Recovery Software And Specialists

Many people are unaware that just because their computer hardware has become damaged in some way does not mean that the data stored on the hard drive is irretrievably lost. There are in fact a number of companies that specialise in data recovery, no matter what the reason for the loss of information on the hard drive in the first place.

There are a number of different types of processes that are used to recover lost information on a variety of different computers and other data storage devices. These processes can differ according to the type of device as well as the operating system that was used on the device. One of these lost data processes is to restore sections or partitions of data that may have been deleted or lost whether intentionally or accidentally.

Recovering Deleted or Lost Partitions

The recovery of data partitions relies mainly on the use of a software program that finds the empty sections and then repairs or replaces the information that has been damaged, lost or deleted. This type of data recovery is aimed at recovery that was not caused by physical damage to the computer although it can be beneficial in some cases where physical damage to the hardware has resulted in deleted or lost partitions.

There are a number of different operating systems that have software programs designed to aid in the recovery of deleted or lost partitions. Some of these operating systems include DOS, Windows, Mac, UNIX and Linux as well as a few others that are commonly used on computers and other data storage devices.

Mac Recovery

Although there are many websites on the internet that offer free Mac data recovery software it is not recommended to use these programs unless you know what you are doing. Incorrect usage of some of these software programs can result in the permanent deletion or loss of partitions or other system information that is important to the functioning of your operating system. Rather find professionals who offer expert Mac data recovery and be sure that you are doing no damage in the process of trying to recover lost or deleted data on your own.

Windows Recovery

Windows has a great data recovery tool that you can either download or purchase at a nominal cost. However, depending on the extent of the lost data and the damage that has been caused to the operating system as well as other systems on the hard drive it may be advisable to use professional data recovery. There are also different types of recovery and repair programs to select from so if you are unsure which will be most suitable to meet your requirements, opt for expert recovery of deleted or lost partitions.

Linux Recovery

Linux also has a fully automated data recovery software program that can be obtained at a cost. Because of the automated nature of the program it is very user-friendly and many Linux users find that they are able to initiate and process data recovery successfully without help. However, it is important to know what you are doing before initiating the process which could lead to the irretrievable loss of some or all data while the Linux operating system is fully restored to its previous operation.

Professional data recovery is rather affordable when compared with the cost of purchasing these types of software packages. The rates for recovering lost, damaged or deleted data are determined by three things. The first part of a quote will be comprised of the amount of time the technician is expected to work on recovering the data. The second part of the costs relate to the percentage of data that can be recovered within the time frame.

The last data recovery cost involves physical damage to the hardware where the price of any necessary replacement parts will need to be calculated. Always keep in mind that a specialist in recovering data should never bill you for any time that has been spent working on the recovery process if not data was recoverable at all from the hard drive or other data storage device. This makes getting professional data recovery rather than repair and recovery software much more cost-effective.

Why Email Archiving in the Cloud Is the Perfect Solution for Your Business

For years, individuals and businesses have been enjoying the benefits of Internet based email access. Popular providers, such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo, have all been operating for years and have millions of happy customers.

Over the last few years, one of the big industry trends has been towards Cloud Computing. Third-party providers host both applications and data and customers access it over the Internet. The host company charges each business that uses its services by their usage, so light users pay considerably less than heavy users for the service. Also, because data is available "away" from the office and the office PCs, there is no danger of losing really valuable information like past emails or contact details.

The providers use their data centres to host the data, and take advantage of virtualization techniques to be able to rapidly scale up and down the servers for times of increased demand. This also allows for the rapid fail-over to alternate hardware in the event of a hardware failure. Many of the companies even offer the ability to fail virtual servers over to alternative data centres in the event of a complete failure in one site.

If a company is thinking of outsourcing its email provision, which in the current climate could make economic sense, then a cloud-based email provider can certainly offer great resilience. Not only do they offer protection in the event of a hardware failure, but backups are taken as standard to protect against data corruption or loss.

Another great advantage if using a cloud-based email provider is that you can go straight to the latest version of the email software. Exchange 2010 is commonly available through these providers, who have the skills and experience to give you a seamless migration from your current email system.

With Exchange 2010, you still get all the great features that came with the previous versions, but with extra stability and security built in, such as email archiving. This means that your data will be secure from hacking but you will still have convenient access from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Cloud-based email provision offers an economical way to provide a stable and secure platform for your corporate email system. You can even get the email platform upgraded to Exchange 2010 at the same time as you migrate, taking out all the hard work of the migration. Cloud-based services really are the future of the internet.

Quandaries of OST File that Arise the Need of a Tool to Perform OST Email Restore

The MS Outlook email client is a widely used desktop mail client that allows a range of top class features but unfortunately when corruption strikes even Outlook fails to stop it from affecting the files it stores in it. When the Outlook is connected with the Exchange Server environment it doesn't work independently and PST file is not created.

When corruption attacks the users look out for alternatives for OST email restore process. But as they say precaution is always better than the cure and in order to make preventive measures you must also be aware of the reasons of corruption that make the OST file data inaccessible.

Introduction to Reasons Responsible for OST Depravation

Edb.log Data Deletion: The records of the alterations made in an email message that is already sent to database, are stored in the log file of the Exchange Server i.e. the edb.log file. When the log file of the Exchange Server is mistakenly deleted then the users might face a number of issues like; not fully but partially committed transaction that most of the times leads to a modest issue i.e. partly displaced email message. The transactions Convert OST to PST are partly committed may also sometimes be the reason for the most important incompatibility internally.

How to Recover files from Emptied Trash on Mac OS X?

Accidently emptied trash bin on Mac OS X? Mistakenly deleted files using "Command+Del"? Is it possible to recover files that were deleted from trash bin?

Generally, whenever you deleted files, the file itself is not deleted from hard drive but the entries from hard drive directory deleted. And the space occupied by the deleted files can be taken by other files. Therefore, it is possible to recover deleted files from trash.

When you realize the files were deleted, you had better not write new data to Mac OS X. The earlier you try to recover trash files, the greater chance to get back deleted Mac files. Otherwise, the space may be overwritten by other new files as time goes on.

How to recover trash on Mac?

If you want to retrieve files that were emptied from trash bin, you have to rely on the third party Mac trash recovery software. Card Data Recovery for Mac is the comprehensive Mac data recovery program. It can recover all kinds of files from Mac OS X, More than that, it also can recover deleted, formatted photos, video, songs, etc. from MacBook, iPod, digital camera, USB, etc. It is compatible with all Mac operating system like Mac OS X v10.0, Mac OS X v10.1, Mac OS X v10.4, Mac OS X v10.5, Mac OS X v10.6, etc.

Hard Drive Data Recovery Can Be Simple To Perform

Almost everyone uses a computer these days. There may be times when the need for hard drive data recovery arises. Many computer users believe this is an at that only a Computer Technician should attempt. However, this is not true. Recovering data from a the computer's drive can be quite simple when armed with accurate information and the correct tools. It can be as uncomplicated as restoring deleted files from the recycle bin on the computer.

One of the most important things to keep in mind if you want to successfully retrieve lost data from your hard drive is that you need to be sure that you do not overwrite this data. Therefore, once you know that there is data you need to recover from your hard drive, be sure to not store or write any additional files on it until you have completed the data recovery. With this in mind, we can look at two of the most common types of data recovery.

File Recovery after Deletion

If you are using Windows Operating System, a deleted file will be first sent to your computer's recycle fin, depending on your recycle bin's settings. However, with another setting, the file that was deleted does not get moved to the recycle bin and is removed from your computer's file system. Recovering a file that has been moved into the recycle bin is easy, simply locate it in the recycle bin and right click on the file, then choose the restore option. However, if your recycle bin has been emptied, you will not longer be able to restore files using this method.

Fixing - The file… - error in Outlook

Letting users work in the offline mode is one of the most attractive and unique features of the Outlook email client.

This is made possible with the help of the OST files. The OST files get the credit of allowing or let's say enabling users to work in the offline mode. By offline mode, we simply mean to say that the users are able to work even when there is no network connectivity. In more detail, the users can write emails, add or delete a contact and do lots more in the offline mode.

However, these OST files sometimes become damaged and corrupt and you are therefore not able to access any data present in them.

Now you must be thinking as to what you can do in order to resolve this issue.
Well, a lot can be done in order to resolve this issue.
Our first and foremost suggestion to you is to use the last, valid, and proper OST file backup to restore your valuable and precious data.

However, there are times when a proper and valid OST file backup is just not available. In such a scenario, you can use the Microsoft inbuilt utility Scanost.exe to repair the damaged and corrupt OST files.

Three Steps to Compliant Data Archiving - A Guide for Small Financial Firms

Financial firms who are members of FINRA need to select a vendor that understands their unique needs, while keeping the overall cost of compliance down. There are three key requirements FINRA members need to look for in a vendor to help them outsource the long-term archiving of data in compliance with SEC rules.

1. Archiving Various Data Types

When selecting a vendor to outsource the long-term archiving of electronic records, small financial firms need a provider that can backup and retain a wide range of data types. Ensuring they meet the requirements outline in SEC/FINRA rule 17a-3 in conjunction with rule 17-4, they must take into account data contained in the Books and Records, systems configuration, and all communications such as email, instant messaging and social media. In addition, the vendor must be able to retain the original data formats so that historical records can be accessed by compliance officers and auditors at any time.

Essentially, when a member of FINRA seeks a vendor to help them with the long-term archiving of data, it is important that the provider fully understand current and historical data must be accessed using old legacy systems. This is not only important for on-going compliance reviews, but also during audits. So firms will find it beneficial to be able to provide auditors with archiving data in formats that can be easily read, and in essence, this will speed up the auditing process and ensure FINRA staff are out the door quickly.

2. Retention of Data in Non-rewritable Format

Once the proper formats of data are being archived and made accessible to auditors and compliance offices, FINRA firms need to be sure the data is stored on non-rewriteable media, also known as Worm storage. This is hard disk used by the provider that is storing the historical data on disk technology prevents the deleting or overwriting of data. This is a critical component of SEC data retention rules, and FINRA members must ensure they are using a provider that has implemented WORM disk to store their data.

3. Quick Recoverability

It is important that FINRA members select a vendor that can recover all current and archived data within a timely manner, usually within 48 hrs. This is an important aspect of the FINRA Business Continuity Planning (BCP) process and should be a feature included with the vendor's service. Often, archiving vendors will have several methods to allow for the recoverably of customers data, depending on the severity of the failure.

For example, if systems are temporarily down due to a minor disaster, the vendor should offer a web interface access to archived data so customers can still view data in the interim while the systems are being recovered; in the event of a major disaster, the vendor should be able to make a full copy of its customer's data on a removable drive and drop ship it to any location so the customers can fully recovery at a secondary disaster site.

The Business Continuity Planning (BCP) requirement is closely connect to the long-term archiving of data. Ensuring the same vendor who is performing the long-term archiving of data can also recovery the data in the event of a disaster is key to simplifying the data compliance strategy, it will also help to keep the costs down and speed up the auditing process.

Summary

Small financial firms need to outsource the long-term archiving of electronic records for compliance. Because of the lack of in-house expertise, they need to find a vendor who understands their unique requirements and can retain the data in the proper format and make it readily available in the event of a disaster or during audits. Choosing the right provider is critical to keeping the cost down and simplifying the process, failing to assign the proper third party can be costly and result in audit failure, large fines and untimely impact customer confidence.

Recover Exchange Server Errors when Organization Stuck in a Bad Situation

Logical Errors is also the Cause for Corruption in Exchange Server: Fall of Microsoft Exchange Server in severe bad condition is 50% due to errors, to show dependency of any free inbuilt utility is useless because Microsoft offers no inbuilt utility to detect logical corruption in Exchange database files. The fact remains that there is no specific indications to identify logical damage in Exchange database however you find content in EDB files get inaccessible and you are not in a grave acute data loss situation.

Situation: Just imagine that in your organization Exchange Server is running to access data from MS Exchange Server, but all of sudden you find following entries in Application Event Log:

Event ID: 42
Source: EDB
Type: Warning
Category: General
Description: MSExchangeIS ((###)) the database engine found a bad page.

The above mentioned entries in Application Event log clears that logical corruption is the real cause of damage to Exchange Server database files.

Cause for Error:

Once you restore the database and if you replay the wrong transaction log file, logical corruption in Exchange Server database likely to take place.

Due to JET_errBadPageLink errors logical corruption in Exchange Server database occurs

Benefits of Shredding of Confidential Files

The Shredding of Confidential Files is extremely necessary as these contain quite a lot of personal as well as business information that might be quite at risk if any fraudsters happen to chance upon it. One benefits by protecting oneself from becoming a victim of any of these lurking fraudsters.

The important documents that need to be shredded can be any document like old utility bills, bank statements, Emails if one is online most of the time, many mails that come from relatives or from business associates, old credit and debit cards and many other documents that might contain vital information about residential address or office address or even certain bank details that might be quite helpful to fraudsters in utilising ones name and get into cheating easily. All these documents contain confidential information and thus it is important that such documents should be shredded right on time before it is too late and one cannot keep track of what one has lost.

Shredding of Confidential Files always helps to lessen the burden of unnecessary paper at home and in office. Shredding also helps to get rid of excess accumulated old files that are of no use and unclog areas in homes and offices. A lot of space is saved if all these documents which despite having all personal information are of no use and so are shredded on time.

Keeping Virtual Machines Safe and Backed Up

Keeping virtual machines running smoothly has its challenges, but a well-defined virtual machine backup plan guarantees a resilient and secure system that keeps your data and virtual machine configurations safe. You can accomplish these goals through a combination of snapshots, backup agents and best practices.

Snapshots and backup agents

One amazing feature of virtual machines technology is the ability to take a snapshot of an entire machine at any point of time. You can take a snapshot while the machine is live and running programs and use it later to roll back your virtual machine to its previous state. You can use the snapshot to restore or back out configuration changes that are causing instability.

The snapshot feature may seem like all you need to keep your system's data safe, but it is only one component of a solid recovery plan.

Snapshot also has a drawback. Since snapshots store all the details of a virtual machine's configuration, programs and data, they consume a lot of disk space. If your disaster recovery plan simply includes taking regular snapshots, you will soon run out of space and watch as your virtual machine grinds to a halt. Most of the snapshot is just storing redundant configuration data over and over again anyway.

Data Recovery Services - Getting The Best Option For BackUp

Data loss is never a pleasant experience for everyone. This is a serious problem when the lost data contained sensitive information. Companies and individuals to store information on different types of digital storage media. These disks can suffer a failure and the loss of information in the case of the time. When this happens, most people immediately think one of the most popular data recovery software, which are available on the market. These tools are extremely useful but have limited hard drive recovery of data that can be done.

When the software can not work, we need Data Recovery(Daten Wiederherstellung)  services company. This has usually required when the problem has to do with the hardware or complex software problems. These companies have experts hard disk data recovery that can do the job effectively.

Success Hard Drive Recovery service will help  to regain access to the data storage device is defective. Recovered data have transferred to the device, which is in superb condition. This is an immensely valuable service for companies and businesses that have extremely valuable data that they do not want to lose.   Its use can cause more trouble than it reduces the chances of recovering your valuable information.

Hidden Questions About PC Backup

Computers are most of the time, if not all the time, linked with data. Yet, there is a fear for people to lose their files due to a hard drive failure. Sad to say, this has become a common situation. This resulted to the wide usage of PC Backup Software program for the past few years and still counting.

As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. The entire PC performance, especially file saving and other forms of data writing, is usually slowed down when bad sectors attack. It is possible to identify bad sectors by running an error checking utility. It will also check your entire file system to make sure every folder and file is in the right place.

Having a backup of your files can be reasonably considered as purchasing an insurance policy for them. Although protection is limited only to the data stored within and not on the physical PC itself, this will be beneficial not only for losses due to disaster but also minor issues that could result to data loss such as virus attack. Laptop backup software keeps your electronic data fully covered and well accessible after your system is rebooted and up and running.

The PC backup technology has been greatly innovated with the birth of data deduplication. Business networks contain many redundant copies of the same information, for example email attachments sent to multiple users. This will not only consume more storage space but will increase backup time requirement as well. Deduplication deletes all duplicate copies and leaves just the source data. It changes all duplicates with just links to a sole copy being maintained.

This backup program will also benefit the IT department of each company. While backup times is 10 times faster, the program-aware deduplication of data makes use of only one server for storage. This feature allows more users (ten more users to be exact) to use the application. Therefore, businesses are able to attain maximum ROI through minimizing storage expense. Now you can avoid loss of intellectual assets in the form of files that have been saved in individual laptops because everything else is shared with the whole company.
