It only takes a few minutes to set the preferences. Time Machine keeps a record of all files added, deleted and modified. Users of Time Machine can browse back to see a file's history and restore it to the present system state. It also keeps a complete copy of the system for full backup and migration purposes. Windows might be adding a similar feature to Windows 8, called History Vault.
Using Cloud Storage For Data Backup
Storing your data online is called "cloud storage". Apple provides 22GB of cloud storage with the MobileMe family package - also called iDisk. But soon it will be called iCloud, and we will be required to pay Apple $40/year for 20GB of storage, or $100/year for 50GB - less money than any other cloud storage company. There are many cloud storage companies that are easy to find on the internet. There are many reviews and comparisons of the different services on the internet. Some will even automatically backup your data to an external hard drive and also to the cloud. Play it safe and pick one of the big-name companies to deal with.
Isn't Backing Up To The Cloud Risky?
Your data will be stored in an encrypted format when it is backed up to the cloud at the storage company, which should prevent a hacker from easily accessing your information. Do yourself a favor and make sure that you understand when and why you might need to encrypt your backups and think hard about how you'll ensure you have access to your encryption password when it counts. Data encryption will cost you too much time, money, and aggravation.

Our hosting company also sends us a backup copy by email. Our mailing lists are kept at an online mailing list company. The list can easily be downloaded from the mailing list company. We also keep a copy of it on our computers and hard drives. All of our online publications (ebooks and edocuments) also have full copies with the companies that sell our publications.
